About

British Oak Montessori Year 1

This is an important transitional year, marking the end of your child’s journey in the lower primary years, and the beginning of their exposure to the National Curriculum, as their learning takes on a more academic direction.

Children will continue to further their reading, writing and spelling by consolidating their phonetic knowledge from EYFS as well as moving on to more in-depth mathematical understanding involving number, addition and subtraction, fractions and time.

Child-led learning and learning through play are still a part of the curriculum this year, with Teachers providing guidance and challenging children to higher level thinking.

A high priority is given to supporting children to become literate, numerate and independent learners, building on from the skills developed in the Foundation Stages. This year, children engage in a more comprehensive phonics programme, and are introduce to cursive writing.

Special focus is given to strengthening social competence skills and fostering independence as we nurture and guide your child towards their transition to ‘Big School’.
