Foundation skills for learning are fostered through play

About

British Oak Montessori Nursery Program

Our nursery program combines play with learning, following the modern Montessori Method of education. Children in our Montessori nurseries enjoy all the activities of a traditional nursery, including outdoor play, indoor play, creativity, songs, stories and role play. In addition, they have unlimited access to internationally approved Montessori equipment on easy-to-reach shelves, giving them freedom of choice to choose their own activities under the careful observation of dedicated and trained Montessori staff.

Teachers within our Montessori nurseries aim to assist the children in their day- to-day knowledge and understanding, not just by teaching them but by showing them the enjoyment and significance of each task completed. Teachers at British Oak Montessori are devoted to the care and development of each and every child, observing their work and individually introducing new challenges when the child is ready.

British Oak Montessori aims to nurture children into strong, competent, independent individuals through positive relationships, in a safe, happy learning environment.

Our Nursery program includes

  • Responsive, reciprocal interactions between teachers and children

  • Varied activities and experiences every day

  • Safety, security and rigorous hygiene practices

Our 1-to-2-year age group have a range of practical life activities that many of the children will have seen at home but usually do not have access to. They have the home corner full of pots, pans, little brushes and pans, toolboxes, to name a few. They also have many age-appropriate Montessori materials to help with their fine motor skills and sensory materials. Alongside this we have the traditional activities to help them move and explore and engage, building their confidence to ‘have a go’ in preparation for the later materials when they move on to the two-year old’s classroom.

Our 2-to-3-year age group, come into a classroom full of new practical life, sensorial, language and mathematics activities. The pouring, transferring, knobbed cylinders, insets, shapes, dressing frames etc, are designed specifically for this age group and are accessible at all times. Children have the freedom to choose the Montessori materials as well as to move freely around the room, exploring our activities, or joining in arts, crafts, or any of the traditional areas.

Every day the child’s key person will spend time on a one-to-one basis or in a small group introducing the child to a new activity. The 2 to 3 age group have access to many sensorial materials that prepare them for later mathematics activities, learning about size, length, shape, quantities etc.

Children will start to learn phonic letter sounds and start to trace the sandpaper letters, starting with the initial sound of their name. Many fun games are played, such as I spy, where two or three objects are put on the table and the children guess the object the letter begins with. The Montessori sensorial materials are specifically designed to help the child with their pincer grip for later writing. Children have access to writing materials, arts and crafts and all other activities of a traditional EYFS nursery, with the added bonus of Montessori materials with people specially trained to use them.
